Description: The second edition of the book SHIP DESIGN—Methodologies of Preliminary Design of the author is a thorough update of the material presented in the first edition, while considering scientific, technological and regulatory developments in the last decade in ship design, maritime transport and shipbuilding technology, particularly through the introduction of holistic approaches to ship design and optimization, the simulation based ship design by the use of advanced computational simulation tools of ship’s performance and the impact of the latest international regulations referring to the decarbonization of shipping on ship design and operation. The second edition is supplemented by two more Appendices, namely the holistic optimization of ship design with an innovative tanker design case study (Appendix F) and a State of the Art (SoA) report of ship design in the era of digital transition by an international expert team of co-authors (Appendix G).
The book includes a comprehensive bibliography and an updated list of important contemporary references to ship design theory and practice, including references to significant international research projects showing the way ahead. A new feature of the second edition is a series of valuable historical references to important personal-ities, scientists, and engineers with major contributions to the theory and practice of ship design and naval architecture. Historical knowledge still remains important in the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the planning of our future.
The methodology adopted in the writing of this book has been greatly influenced by the many years of teaching and research experience of the author in ship design, ship hydrodynamics, and maritime safety. The book in its original form (written in Greek) followed the requirements of the curriculum of NTUA, particularly in view of the requirement for the elaboration of the “Ship Design project” by final year NTUA students of naval architecture. The book presumes the prior attendance of prereq-uisite courses by the students, namely on ship hydrodynamics, on ship structures, on ship stability, on ship machinery/propulsion/steering, and on maritime transport/ economics, the basic material of which is repeated herein as to their impact on ship design. In that respect, the student is introduced gradually into ship design, until he is capable of developing by himself (under certain guidance, in the preliminary stage) the design of a ship, which is assigned to him by a hypothetical shipowner, speci-fying a merchant ship’s
